Venice is a city in northern Italy, the capital of region Veneto. Together with Padua,,the city included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan area. Venice is also nicknamed as “ Queen of the Adriatic”, “city of water”, “city of bridges”,  and “ the city of light”.
With the population of 271,251, the city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic sea in north-east Italy. Around 62,000 people inhabit thehistoric city of venice (centro storico),176,000 people live in firm land (Terraferma), mostly live in the large frainoze of Mestre and Maghera, and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.
The Venetian Republic was major maritime power and a very important center of commerce,especially silk, grain and spice trade. It was also the centre of Renaissane art up to the end of the 17th century.
